Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia's 'Geek-the-Genius' winner named

A cash prize of RM20, 000 (US$6,441) has been awarded to the winner of the 'Geek-the-Genius' competition, organised by French communications giant Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia, to encourage more local Internet content.

Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia president and managing director Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh congratulated the 28-year old Web developer, Saifol Anwar Abd Rahman, whose game application to help teach the Malay language to children, named "Hang Tuah Selamatkan Bahasa Melayu" (Hang Tuah Saves the Malay Language), impressed the panel of judges.

"Children of this age are exposed to different kinds of games and applications, including adventure, sports and strategy games," said the grand prizewinner, Saifol Anwar Abd Rahman. "Educational games are often seen as less attractive. The idea of Hang Tuah Selamatkan Bahasa Melayu is to break such perspectives by providing an educational yet fun game - adventurous and interactive to engage the minds of the young ones. I am glad to have been selected by Alcatel-Lucent and their judges as the Grand Prize winner."

Alcatel-Lucent's Mohd Fazlin praised the effort and creativity shown by all the winners and hoped they would continue to develop more local content for the next generation of Malaysians.

"The Geek-the-Genius contest served as a launch pad for Malaysians to showcase their creativity and talent in creating simple, yet interactive applications that appeal to children," he said. "We hope that this initiative will spur Malaysians to continue creating more localised and appealing content for the next generation of Internet-savvy Malaysians."

More than 100 registrations were received from Malaysians during the contest period of 12 weeks, said Mohd Fazlin, who added that the judging was based on criteria that included the level of creativity, originality, educational level, the user experience, as well as suitability and relevance to the target audience.

A total of 13 cash prizes were awarded -- the Grand Prize at RM20,000; First Runner up Prize at RM12,000 [US$3,862]; Second Runner up Prize at RM5,000 [US$1,609]; and 10 Consolation Prizes worth RM700 [US$225.23] each.
