Ninetology, MediaTek partnership gives birth to quadcore U9 smartphones

Malaysia-based mobile firm Ninetology's partnership with fabless semiconductor company MediaTek Inc. has produced a new range of quadcore, Android-powered smartphones built around lifestyle and communications demands.

During the launch of the U9 series, comprising three models - X1, Z1, and Z1+, Ninetology chief executive officer Sean Ong said the new devices would meet the everyday needs of urbanites by enabling "deeper levels of engagement."

 "[Our] strategic partnership with MediaTek Inc. has provided us with high performance, integrated, customised and reliable information communications solutions, which has significantly shortened our time-to-market, enhanced our product competitiveness, and also bring a better overall user experience," said Ng.

"[Ninetology] currently is second largest in terms of mobile device market share," he said. "With the introduction of the U9 series, we hope to further strengthen Ninetology's position as well as to grab a sizeable share in the Premium Smartphones category. We are targeting to sell 80,000 of the U9 series in Malaysia,"

MediaTek Inc. general manager, international sales and marketing, Dr Finbarr Moynihan said he was pleased the collaboration has resulted in the new U9 range. "With MediaTek's Quad-core MT6589 chipsets inside, these three models - U9 X1, Z1, and Z1+   - are definitely the premium Quad-core smartphones that many customers in the Asean market will be able to enjoy."

"Powered by Android 4.2, the U9 series delivers a richer smartphone experience at a competitive price," he added. "Customers can access thousands of   applications including social network, productivity, utilities, and entertainment."

The U9 smartphones come with display screens ranging from 4.8 to 5.7 inches with 309 ppi and 1280 x 720 super AMOLED HD, he said. Along with 16GB ROM/1GB RAM of internal memory, X1 and Z1+ also offer SD memory card support, which allows up to 32GB of additional content storage.

Together with 12 and 13 megapixel rear cameras, the U9 smartphones also offer a 'Dual Camera' function, which allows simultaneous use of both front and rear cameras.  The U9 phones (X1, 10mm, 160g; Z1, 9.3mm, 191g; Z1+, 9mm, 158g) and it also use Corning's Gorilla Glass 2 (Z1 and Z1+).

 Just the beginning

"This is just the beginning," said Ng. "In the near future, we plan to deliver various segments of smartphones with premium performance tailor-made for the needs of customers," said Ninetology's Ng.

 "We begin with three models, emphasizing on their respective styles to represent the spirit of U9 in this very launch," he said. "The creation of the U9 smartphone series began by focusing on the needs of users, their demands and behaviors, the mobile device trends they favour, alongside the urban concept as the ultimate platform."
