It's fasting month here in Malaysia. You would think things would move at a slower pace, perhaps even with a touch of extra rain and gloom thrown in.
Indeed, when I first arrived here in 1999, there always did seem to be that certain moving down to a lower gear among most industry sectors, not just good old ICT.
With the softening economy, rising prices and various other uncertainties here, I would have expected to receive far fewer invitations to media briefings, and certainly very few buka puasa invitations (breaking fast at sunset with slap up feasts at an appropriately up market hotel).
Well, the good news is the number of ICT media invites averages more than 15 per week, and I am about to touch double digits with the number of buka puasa invites I have received.
The message is loud and clear: Malaysia-based tech companies mean to blaze away and expand across new borders, regardless of the odd hindrance.
Despite uncertainties in the market, in the country and the need to tighten belts, Malaysians seem determined to gut it out with gusto.
Moreover, as soon as the fasting stops at the end of this month, even more fun is on the way in October. There are key forums such as just off the top of my head - Computerworld's own SME forum, Frost & Sullivan's leadership forum in KL...and well, it is good to be busy, isn't it?
All these hopeful expressions divert the mind away from any looming clouds. In all this activity, maybe we will not notice the rain as much.
After all, as my industry friends remind me: the sun is still up there, somewhere.
