The OnePlus 3 and 3T are the big winners in the world of updates this week. The former is getting another taste of Nougat thanks to the company’s beta software program. The 3T isn’t there yet, but it’s the recipient of another update that promises several improvements.
Each week, we round up all the major software updates to hit the Android ecosystem, including phones and tablets on U.S. carriers, unlocked phones, smartwatches, and Android TV devices. Making sure your device is running the latest available software is a good housekeeping practice, ensuring you have the latest features with fewer bugs and security holes.
OnePlus 3: An update for the Nougat beta build is rolling out now. You can grab Open Beta 9, which also adds the ability to expand upon a screenshot and the usual round of performance and stability improvements.
OnePlus 3T: An update is available for the latest OnePlus phone, although unfortunately this isn’t Nougat. OxygenOS 3.5.4 includes optimizations for using T-Mobile, a reduction to lag when you’re below five percent battery life, and several other fixes and improvements.
Android Dashboard: The December numbers are out and it’s another small jump for Nougat from November, going from .3 percent to .4 percent on active Android devices.
Marshmallow jumped from 24 percent to 26.3, while Lollipop had a .1 percent dip. The biggest move over to Nougat will likely come when Samsung begins to move it out of beta release a stable build to the Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, and other phones given the company’s dominant market position.
Galaxy Note7: Samsung can’t make this disaster go away fast enough. In an effort to safeguard any devices that are still out in the wild, the company announced it’s pushing out an update that will brick the remaining phones.
After initially balking, Verizon said it will participate and deliver the update on Jan. 5. The other major carriers are on board, with T-Mobile’s update coming Dec. 27, AT&T on Jan. 5, and Sprint sending it out on Jan. 8.
