IT freedom boosts Singapore employees’ happiness

Company IT policies have an impact on employee satisfaction and productivity, according to VMware’s new study.

A new study commissioned by VMware has proved that device democracy in the workplace is a source of employee retention, attraction, and productivity.

The New Way of Work study, which surveyed a little over 2,000 people across Asia, found that companies’ IT policies have an impact on employee well-being and satisfaction. Out of about 200 respondents from Singapore, 67 percent said they are happier at work when allowed to use their personal portable devices, said VMware’s Matthew Hardman who was speaking at Singapore’s Suntec Convention Centre yesterday (3 April). More than 50 percent said they are less stressed when they use personal devices to get their job done, added the senior product manager.

VMware also observed similar results with software and application democracy. In fact, according to Hardman, 38 percent of the local respondents said they would save money for their company if they were able to use their choice of Web-based, customised software or applications at work.

Hardman also pointed out that restrictive IT policies is a barrier to productivity. Based on the Singapore findings, 56 percent of the respondents said they are less efficient when blocked from certain websites and restricted from installing applications and connecting their personal devices to the corporate network.

Additionally, 60 percent said they are more effective and 58 percent said they are better at solving problems when allowed to use their personal devices to work.

More than 60 percent viewed companies that support BYOD (bring your own device) policies as the “employers of choice”, said Hardman.
