Q&A: Evolution of the broadcasting market in Asia

Zafar Anjum | June 27, 2013
Driven by the convergence of web and traditional broadcast mediums, broadcasters now need to be able to deliver differentiated personalised services across a range of screens, says Deepakjit Singh, Managing Director, Asia, Encompass Digital Media.

What is Megapod? How did it come into origin? Who are the backers?

Singapore is envisaged as a Global Media City, Asia's leading media marketplace where superior content is produced and digital media is developed. Capitalising on this Asian media utopia, media services need to constantly be created, developed  and distributed to the international market.

It  is with this in mind that the MEGAPOD was developed that will serve to be Asia's first-of-its-kind multi-channel broadcast monitoring and playout facility that will double capacity to meet customer demand for content on all four screens across Asia Pacific. The new MEGAPOD will allow content partners to provide entertainment-on-demand across a variety of devices and create new options to monetise content as quickly as possible at a much reduced cost of operating and managing the content.

Together with Encompass' existing facility, the MEGAPOD will offer clients a robust infrastructure that will offer increased capacity for playout, distribution, digital media manipulation, ad inserts, creative, technical and global archival services. The MEGAPOD will also be seamlessly connected to  post-production facility that will give our clients an end-to-end solution for creating and delivering content.

At Encompass, we believe in a culture of innovation and staying true to this, plans for the MEGAPOD facility were designed and conceived by the company's in-house engineering team. Planning for the project took 18 months and brought together multiple "best of breed" products including infrastructure by Ideal Systems and leading technology from Miranda Technologies and Cisco.

To date, I am happy to announce that more than six tier-one broadcasters have indicated plans to take advantage of the MEGAPOD.

What technologies are you leveraging on for Megapod?

The new MEGAPOD is designed to allow content partners to provide entertainment on demand across a variety of linear and non-linear devices as well as create new options to monetise content as quickly as possible. With this investment, Encompass is looking to enable efficiencies that will allow the seamless delivery of content to all four screens - television, desktop, tablet and mobile at minimal incremental costs.

Mindful that we are not able to accomplish this alone, we have leveraged on the expertise of key technology players such as Ideal Systems, Miranda Technologies and Cisco and others to help make this a reality.

How is Megapod going to change the media scene in Singapore and elsewhere?

Encompass' investment in facilities like the MEGAPOD complement Singapore's vision to be a global media city where services and projects are created, developed, traded and distributed around the world. With creating a capacity of handling multi-format, multi-screen content of more than 300 simultaneous feeds we are able to create a capacity to service global requirements from our facility in Singapore. As a key player in this industry, we believe that our investment to the development of the MEGAPOD will accelerate the growth of the company and at the same time, meet the growing demands of customers in Asia by doubling capacity.
