Seventy-eight percent of Singapore's IT decision makers plan to definitely or probably expand their data centres in 2013, according to an independent study commissioned by Digital Realty.
Findings of this study are based on surveys of 100 Singaporean IT decision makers at large corporations. The surveys were conducted in January 2013 and their analysis show that more than two-thirds of the respondents who plan to expand prefer to locate their new data centres in Singapore as compared to other countries in the region
Eighty-two percent of Singapore's IT decision makers who participated in the survey said they are planning this expansion in 2014.
Eighty-three percent intend to use a partner for design and build or to lease wholesale space, or both.
"It is clear that Singapore's data centre users are driving their expansion initiatives forward to manage the exponential growth in IT applications and data storage," said Kris Kumar, senior vice president and regional head of Asia Pacific for Digital Realty.
Expanding in more than one location
Eleven percent of the Singapore-based respondents in the survey owned six or more data centres and about 67 percent had built a new data centre in the past 24 months. Sixty-one percent of those with plans to expand in 2013 said they will expand in more than one location.
There has been an increase in the need for respondents to track and manage data centre power usage effectiveness (PUE) over the last year.
Eighty percent of the companies who plan to expand in 2013 are extremely or very confident that they can comply with future energy or carbon emission regulations.
The average desired space for data centre expansion initiatives is 14,000 sq ft (1300 sq m) and the average power requirement is 5.4kW per rack.
"The continued focus on energy efficiency will drive change in the type of requirements customers have for their data centres," said Kumar. "This will highlight the capabilities of solution providers, such as Digital Realty, that can deliver data centre designs that are not only resilient, but also extremely efficient."
