A look at the SDN trend in Asia: interview

Nurdianah Md Nur | Sept. 30, 2013
SDN is still in the nascent stage, especially in the AP region. Michel Emelianoff shares the reasons for this, and tips for organisations looking to adopt SDN.

Following the above approach allows organisations to easily derive the answer to the question of adoption or waiting further. The answer will not be the same for every organisation. Depending on the answer, an organisation can then evaluate the best course of action to follow.

How does Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise differentiate itself from its competitors in terms of its SDN offerings?
Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise offers a cost effective data centre network with the Mesh/Pod architecture that delivers a compact, low latency fabric. Our built-in orchestration of Applications and the Network also optimises the network and delivers improved business agility via automated detection of Virtual Applications. Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise's networks automatically adjust in response to addition, movement or changes of Virtualised applications, thereby greatly reducing the time needed to deploy applications in a virtualised data centre environment.

In addition, our capability to provide solutions that easily integrates into existing infrastructures means that there will be no rip/replace requirements for the customer. There will also be no forcing of certain technologies on the customer in order to deliver on the business benefits.

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise also offers customers a complete solution. Our belief is that SDN needs to extend to the entire network in order to deliver the automation and high quality user experience - from data centre to core to access and are delivering technologies across all these, leveraging a common operating system infrastructure and managed with a common platform.

Finally, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise's products delivered today will be upgradeable in place as the SDN technology evolves. Without the need for expensive change out with each upgrade, our solutions offer customers protection on their IT investments.

What are Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise's plans for Asia Pacific region?
Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise has been building high performance, mission-critical, carrier-grade network infrastructure with very low carbon footprint for customers ranging from mid-sized healthcare and hospitality segments to organisations in the government and large enterprises in sectors such as service providers, smart cities, transportation, oil & gas and energy. What our customers are telling us is that our IP networking solution in the Cloud Datacenter, LAN Campus, Unified Communications and IPv6 DHCP/DNS address management space makes their network a lot simpler to operate, is highly scalable and very cost effective. This is because apart from the traditional routers, switches and performance management platforms, we are also offering ruggedised products which can withstand extreme working environments.

Now with Asian economies investing heavily in high-speed public and private infrastructure to harness the power of cloud computing and the IP of everything, our plan is to position ourselves as a technology of choice. We are doing this by increasing customer proximity, service quality and lowering their total cost of ownership. And our commitment is to offer a cost effective, carrier-grade Application Fluent Network so as to deliver a rich user experience regardless of media, device and applications.
