Interview: Teliti Datacentres and Hitachi Data Systems on the challenges of developing cloud-based services, backed by Malaysian government's PEMANDU.

A lot of cloud service providers especially ones in the public clouds today don't provide audits or the capability of guarantee around data locality. This is inhibiting cloud growth so having local presence and local skill sets are incredibly important for the cloud's success.


Is this auditing feature part of the HDS solution to Teliti?

Musa Lazim - This is part of the processes that Teliti employs to assure customers that their data is in a resilient infrastructure in the data centre. We utilise some of the features that HDS provides within the storage architecture to enable us to do this audits. It is a capability of both the architecture and also the processes that we employ.

Miki Sandorfi - What you'll find is that a lot of providers have one or the other and cannot provide the level of data centre practice Teliti offers, or the other way around where they have a data centre but not the appropriate solution. So that's why this partnership is so strong - HDS has the software and hardware that can provide audit chain of custody management while Teliti has the central operational practice and certifications around that. Together, the customer gets the best of both worlds with a full solutions stack.


In light of recent events (Sony Playstation network hacking), there are sceptics out there who feel that the cloud is not secure. What is your perspective?

Miki Sandorfi - Just like there are many different automobiles and you can say that all are much the same, which is not true. You can buy a US$5,000 car or you can buy a $500, 000 car, and there is a vast difference between both, just as in a cloud service that you can buy. In many cases, you get what you pay for.

What we are focussed on is how do we provide cloud as a delivery model, because that's what it really is - cloud is a way of delivering IT services that have three key characteristics; self-service - ability to look at my utilisation and modify services that I am consuming, the ability to pay for use - so that I pay for services that I am consuming and the ability to enjoy dynamic skill -  the skill of the service provider so that I can build a large set of resources  and when I don't need it anymore, I can give it back and only pay for what I used. In short, self service, pay per use and dynamic skill are the three key characteristics.

The cloud delivery model needs to have characteristics that align to the business purpose and that's why we are working with providers like Teliti who have the same mindset. HDS has a mindset of never losing information and always providing availability, and that has been our reputation in the market for as long as we have provided data centre solutions.
