To take advantage of Malaysia's growing data centre market, networking solutions provider Cisco has appointed Avnet Malaysia as its IT distributor in the country.

Avnet Malaysia, which is the first entity within the Avnet Asia Pacific and Japan Group to be appointed by Cisco, said the partners, will now distribute the Cisco Unified Computing System, [Cisco UCS].

Cisco UCS is an integrated infrastructure solution, which supports data centres' IT setup, operations and services, said Chiew Yue Lam, general manager of Avnet Technology Solutions in Malaysia.

"This alliance with Cisco further expands our ability to offer local channel partners with market-driven solutions to continue grow in high-growth business areas," said Chiew.

He added that the new collaboration would strengthen local IT resellers' capabilities to capitalise on the business opportunities growing in the data centre market.

"In 2013, our nation's data centre industry recorded more than RM630 [US$192.43] million in revenue with an upward increase by 40 percent from the previous year¹," said Chiew, citing data from national ICT agency MDeC. "The Malaysian data centre market is projected to grow further and fuel the demand for integrated infrastructure solutions for data centres' design and build."

 Added urgency

"We see added urgency on the part of data centre operators in trying to reduce the cost of data centre management," he said. "This is leading to a surge in demand for integrated infrastructure solutions to simplify traditional data centres' architectures for greater operational efficiency."

"Avnet Malaysia will be able to reinforce Cisco's brand and market leadership position by helping Malaysian resellers and businesses to harness opportunities in Big Data and mobility as we drive the Internet of Everything (IoE) vision," said Chiew.
Julie Hens, Cisco systems' vice president of worldwide distribution, said, "[Avnet] has already demonstrated a great track record in the US and EMEA and we are also continuing to ramp up in Latin America. I am confident we can capitalise on this great momentum in data centre with this move into Malaysia."
"As a value-added distributor, Avnet will help our existing network of IT resellers remove the complexity associated with the integration to better support the adoption of more flexible and efficient shared IT infrastructures that are optimised for virtualisation and cloud computing," added Bennett Wong, vice president of Avnet Asean.
