Seventy-two percent of organisations want to do more off-site data replication, according to a February 2013 commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Silver Peak Systems.
This demand for off-site data replication is due to an increase of data being stored by businesses and the need to protect it from natural disasters.
About two-thirds (66 percent) of businesses are limited by their wide area network (WAN) performance, and this is the reason why they are unable to fully utilise off-site data replication.
Growth in data volumes and replication distances has made it difficult to design and implement an efficient and reliable disaster recovery (DR) plan.
Sixty-five percent of businesses were found to have more than 100 terabytes of data company-wide, and 39 percent have more than a petabyte. Data replication takes too long for 54 percent of the respondents and 44 percent are not meeting their recovery time and recovery point objectives.
Upgrading data replication plans
Thirty-four percent of data is not replicated at all and this leaves data at risk. Fifty-three percent have prioritised to upgrade their current DR plans within the next 12 months.
Seventy-six percent said it was important or very important for off-site replication acceleration to be low-cost and easy to configure and manage.
Seventy-two percent of the respondents are searching for a solution that requires no changes to the existing network configuration.
Recent advances in virtualisation technology can help the delivery of a replication acceleration solution that is software-based, says the study entitled "WAN Acceleration Fast-Tracks Data Protection And Disaster Recovery."
