Vuclip unveils Malaysian consumer metrics for its video service Viu

The freemium video service, which focuses on Asian content, offers up three insights for the first 60 days since its launch in Malaysia.

Video-on-demand service provider Vuclip, a PCCW Media company, has released Malaysian consumer engagement metrics data for the first two months of its video service Viu.

Kingsley Warner, general manager of Vuclip Malaysia, said this viewer data was the result of analysing app and desktop viewership.

Warner said the top three findings are that:

  • The average Viu user watches 20 videos per month. The most active times are at night after work hours, with the most popular days being Wednesday through Sunday.
  • The top ten pieces of content consumed on Viu include Korean TV shows, Bollywood movies and Malaysian TV shows, which showcases consumer demand for the Best of Asian Entertainment.
  • 90 percent of videos are watched with subtitles in both regional languages as well as English.

Warner said Viu, which aimed to serve an increasingly fragmented online audiences with Asian TV and movie content, has nine (9) million subscribers per quarter across Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and India.

 "We believe in focusing on non-vanity metrics that are consumer-focused to drive our business, meaning engagement time, retention rate and consumer reviews," he said.

"While it is still early days for us with 60 days since our successful launch in Malaysia, the initial numbers around consumer engagement and our strategic partnerships are very exciting and validate our strategy to be a global service offering Best of Asian content with a localised experience," said Warner.

A freemium service, Viu offers Malaysian viewers access to thousands of hours of content while a Viu premium service by subscription will provide an advertising-free experience for RM10 (U$2.56) per month.

 Content is available from regional and international marquee studios such as Primeworks Distribution, Media Prima, MD Entertainment Indonesia, Vision Plus Entertainment, Double Vision, Media Quiz, Huace, Media Asia, Transmedia and Caracol.
