Changing the game in data centre management: HP

HP launches new enterprise platform products in Asia

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 MAY 2010 -- A new range of game-changing enterprise products has been launched, which will reinvent mission-critical computing, according to technology provider HP.

Speaking during the Malaysian launch, HP Malaysia country manager, business critical systems, enterprise servers, storage and networking, Kelvin Khaw, said: "To help meet mission-critical customer challenges such as SLAs, uptime, global world demands where there is no time to shut down the system HP's new offerings constitute the first mission-critical converged infrastructure in the industry."

"The real value lies in offering better management capability to data centre managers as well as bring down silos in IT architecture," he said. "This effectively changes the game in data centre management."

"Industries that especially require mission-critical services include financial services, manufacturing and distribution, healthcare, education, government, telecommunications," said Khaw, adding that there were more than 100 new features in the new converged infrastructure launched by HP.

Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, HP programme manager, Juergen Mueller, said: A key part of the launch of what is a revolutionary blade scale architecture, which consists of unified blade architecture, scalable from x86 to Superdome 2 servers, is the matrix component that helps to bring together different aspects of what were previously-siloed components of a data centre the IT sprawl.

Based at HP's Palo Alto facility, Mueller said the key products behind the new converged infrastructure platform included Superdome 2 a server that allowed a mission-critical consolidation platform, Integrity Server Blades, BladeSystem Matrix with HP-UX software, and the Integrity 2s (two socket) Rack Server. HP also launched its AllianceONE partner programme to support hardware and software vendors.


 'Bold, radical move'

Analyst firm IDC director, enterprise computing, domain research group, Rajnish Arora, said: This is a bold and radical move by HP because this is presenting a brand new way of setting up mission-critical applications.

Customers could adopt this converged infrastructure approach in order to evolve into the cloud computing scenario, said Arora. This new approach is shifting from the old of systems as a group of boxes to a notion where IT is now a pool of resources, which offers the advantages of a highly-virtualised environment.

He added that on a worldwide basis, the server market is going through an inflection point, where the industry lost about US$11 billion globally due to the downturn. However, the rate of adoption is actually increasing the number of cores is growing by a 5-7x factor, which offers many business advantages such as reduced costs, increased flexibility, scalability, as well as reduced use of power. 

 

 Power-on once, converged infrastructure

As the data centre becomes more complex, HP has worked to change the game towards a power-on once, configure once objective," said HP's Mueller. "In essence, the new overall approach helps to take the complexity out of IT by bringing together the different components in the IT sprawl, especially with the matrix management tool.

For instance, the matrix tool has templates, which you configure once, he said. This new converged infrastructure is already in use by customers, for instance, a customer in Hong Kong took just 109 minutes to initialise the system."

"The new operating system HP-UX 11i v3 is also running on the new platform, with 10-year support, up to 2017," he said. "RAS (reliable, available and serviceable) features include online optimisation and repair, dynamic reconfiguration and recovery."

"Part of the journey to developing this new converged infrastructure approach was that millions of lines of code were rewritten," he said. "The business benefits include no tolerance for downtime, increasing SLA (service-level agreement) objectives, as well as reduced costs.

Other advantages include more per socket performance, increase of bandwidth, and significant improvements of up to 100 per cent application uptime, Mueller said. With this new technology, which is fully redundant, we can ensure that every transaction in the IT system goes through."
