There are still some serious concerns regarding the use of cloud such as recovery of data in the event of a disaster, security risks in the cloud and workload and complexity. Some had cited a lack of trust in cloud providers. Despite this, there are also benefits of using the cloud which include lower IT operating costs, additional or flexible storage space and improved compliance.

On-premise backup provides a faster recovery, so it helps when one needs to recover an entire system, including the operating system. Cloud data backup, on the other hand, can protect businesses against theft and/or large scale disasters. Businesses also do not have to worry about upgrades or hardware compatibility. The cloud service provider will take care of everything. However, it should be part of a more holistic strategy, combining with on-premise backups, to address both operational and disaster recovery needs.
As businesses continue to use on-premise and online services in various combinations, critical, unique, revenue generating applications will likely stay on-premise and less critical applications will move online. We can see this today with CRM and HR applications moving online with Salesforce.com and ADP iPay. Similarly, we are seeing the need for companies to combine on-premise and cloud backup to achieve greater business resilience and improve business continuity.
An Acronis customer, a business services provider with offices around the region, is using Acronis Backup & Recovery Online to back up the servers at each branch office to an online archive as an alternative to conducting backups from each location to the central site. Acronis Backup & Recovery Advanced Server is used to manage the server backups at the central site and the branch office backups are accessed from the central site during off-peak hours.
By using Acronis Backup & Recovery Online for branch office backup, the service provider found that they could achieve a higher level of data protection while simultaneously reducing the cost of their backup operations. They accomplished this because the branch office backups could be done into the cloud repository during an off-peak period that best accommodated their schedules.
Acronis Backup & Recovery's Catalog facility was used by the central IT site to manage and access all backups in the company. Instead of having to dedicate extensive network bandwidth, sometimes during peak operating hours, to back up the branch offices directly to the central site, the central site could access the branch office backups through the cloud during off peak hours. The branch offices could also conduct their backups into the cloud during off-peak hours and on a schedule that was convenient for them.
