Most APAC organisations unable to detect security breaches immediately

They are most concerned about cloud security and vulnerabilities, according to Fortinet’s survey.

According to Fortinet's recent survey, the majority of organisations in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region are unable to detect security breaches immediately.

Out of the 59 percent that had experienced security breach last year, only 22 percent of them had discovered it within minutes when the breach occurred. In some sectors, like healthcare, 53 percent of the respondents said it took them days, months, or even years to spot the breaches.

To mitigate these attacks, the survey found that the polled APAC IT decision makers (ITDMs) firstly use threat detection technologies (15 percent), followed by cloud-based cybersecurity services (13 percent), which are underpinned by the provision of actionable threat intelligence.

ITDMs cited 'improved risk management' as the greatest value of threat intelligence (55 percent), followed by 'improved prevention of attacks' (53 percent), and 'improved information security strategy' (52 percent).

Meanwhile, majority of the respondents (64 percent) believe that investing in new cybersecurity technologies is the best response to increased security breaches.

Some also viewed increased security breaches as a catalyst to outsource their cybersecurity functions to a managed security service provider (MSSP). More than a third of respondents (38 percent) said they could address cybersecurity priorities through outsourcing within three to five years.

"Our independent study highlights the urgent need among enterprise-scale organisations from all sectors in APAC to prioritise end-to-end cybersecurity protection with actionable, threat intelligence capabilities in the face of new digital business challenges.  Enterprises need to respond more rapidly and effectively to security breaches by investing in integrated, adaptive cybersecurity architectures for the borderless network," said Patrice Perche, Senior Executive Vice President for Worldwide Sales & Support of Fortinet, in a press release.

The 2016 Fortinet Global Security Survey also found that ITDMs in APAC are most concerned about securing their cloud (67 percent), and protecting their systems against vulnerabilities (69 percent).

Conducted by research company Lightspeed GMI on behalf of Fortinet, the survey involved 1,399 qualified IT decision makers in 13 countries - predominantly CIOs, CTOs, IT Directors and Heads of IT - from organisations with more than 250 employees.

The APAC figures given here concern the 643 participants sampled from six markets: China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
