But many of these mixed-use customers could be getting ready to catch the next wave: Disk-to-Disk-to-CLOUD (D2D2C). For these customers, deduplication will enable them to reduce monthly capacity/storage costs in the cloud, while also reducing the amount of data that needs to be uploaded or retrieved.
When we think about cloud-based storage, there are a number of barriers to adoption, but one main objection is that it is very slow to get data back-and-forth from the cloud. Well, it is true compared to disk. But I would argue the true comparison is with tape, especially off-site tape. Getting data up to and back from the cloud is certainly faster than recovering tapes from an off-site location. This especially becomes true when we do not need the whole tape but only a few files on that tape itself.
Deduplication makes things even faster and more efficient. Our n-Tier approach enables organisations to deduplicate data to disk, and then tier it off to the cloud for long-term retention. This not only reduces the amount of data that needs to be sent up into the cloud, but minimises the monthly expenses as well since data sizes reduce dramatically, resulting in lower monthly charges.
However, when it comes to D2D2C replacing disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T), CommVault has four key advantages. CommVault Simpana software has a native cloud-enabler that incorporates the REST http interface, so there is no need to use scripting or a cloud-integration appliance to easily use cloud-based storage as an additional tier for enterprise data. Organisations can simply identify if they are using cloud-based storage and put in the storage providers credentials. And it is good to go.
The approach to indexing is another key to fast and economical recovery. Simpana software can browse and index data. This enables organisations to pinpoint specific documents/files/versions before retrieving them from the cloud. This will drastically reduce not only the amount of data to be retrieved, but also reduce any charges for data transmission on the part of the cloud storage provider. Hence it is faster, cheaper, and simpler.
Encryption of data stored in the cloud is also important. Security of the data is key and hence organisations often send data to a secure off-site location managed by a third-party vendor with specific expertise in this area. The ability to encrypt data in the cloud, by using pass-phrase encryption, makes the data secure even from employees of the cloud storage provider. Only privileged internal users who know the pass-phrase can see the actual data. Everyone else gets undecipherable static.
The ability to index data for eDiscovery also becomes very attractive in a Simpana software-enabled D2D2C environment. The actual indices of the data, both in-house and in the cloud, can be kept local. That means finding and recovering specific files can be done with a quick local search on the index based on specific restrictions and filters. Once the required files are identified, only those items can be recovered from the cloud, dramatically speeding up retrieval and reducing costs compared to a traditional D2D2T approach.
