How Hitachi benefits from HP split and Dell-EMC merger

Saheli Sen Gupta | June 28, 2016
Vivekanand Venugopal of HDS speaks about how events like HP’s split and Dell buying EMC are actually empowering the company and how Hitachi is driving change in the industry.

What role is HDS playing in the development of smart cities in India?

HDS will focus on large initiatives like transportation, water treatment, power generation and healthcare. If one has to drive a public safety solution, Hitachi can provide that.

We can help integrate Hitachi's smart city solution with any company's capabilities to expand its relevance. We will also provide our IoT platform to integrate a smart city together. Our collaboration strategies have really helped in our success and we're getting other companies involved in this project to collaborate with us so that their proposition can be far more economical.

The budget strongly expressed a desire to leverage technology to drive social outcomes. When the government says that technology is the enabler in building infrastructure in core sectors and rejuvenating sectors which contribute directly to India's GDP, it opens up significant opportunities for companies like Hitachi.

What is Hitachi looking forward to in 2016 and what are your future plans?

This year, we will look at three areas-revenue growth, change in portfolio, and solutions created with our SIs.  Our portfolio will change dramatically-currently, a quarter of the revenue is being generated by converged systems and 55 percent is coming from software and services.

We are still a storage company, but that is just one of our solutions now. We are now going to implement a lot of solutions based on analytics and IoT.Solutions we create with our SIs and regional partners will create a bigger impact for the company. These steps are just a logical progression to the changes we began three years ago.

From 2015, we started shifting our revenue portfolio. The Indian market has shifted dramatically and Hitachi is aligning with that. We will focus on IoT, analytics and operational technologies. In the end, we want to be recognised as a holistic IT company, beyond just servers, storage and software.
