After exiting low margin hardware businesses like PCs and servers over the last 12 years IBM's hardware portfolio today is part of a cognitive solutions organization leveraging cloud as a platform.
ComputerWorld India interacted with Paulo Carvao, General Manager, Sales, IBM Systems Hardware on his recent India visit. Carvao, responsible for the sales and go-to-market strategy for IBM's hardware business globally spoke on the company's hardware business, rise of the hybrid cloud and the changing role of CIOs as buyers of technology.
What is the hardware strategy of IBM for 2016 and beyond?
We live in an industry undergoing significant transition in terms of technology, buying behavior and consumption models. The change is impacting everything to the effect that who really is the buyer of IT services and solution which includes CIOs too. Hence we have been repositioning ourselves as a company by rearranging our infrastructure offerings that includes systems hardware.
IBM is now a cognitive solutions company leveraging cloud as a platform. A part of our task was transforming the portfolio to align to this new positioning and different consumption models. One example is our x86 solutions that were transitioned from on premise model to off premise model as an infra as a service. Whether it is this or Softlayer, there is a clear refocus on high end traditional systems of records, systems of engagement and a broad storage portfolio that is positioned for the future of industry.
IBM exited businesses of x86 servers and PCs (sold to Lenovo). It fell to sixth place in 2015 Gartner disk array magic quadrant. What's the big hardware play compared to Dell and HPE to name a few?
In the compute world, we continue to serve our clients leveraging the hybrid cloud strategy that takes advantage of our present on premise capabilities and also bridge the clients' journey towards cloud world. We have traditional systems of records where we expand both - high end mainframe as well as power offerings. We have significant and successful presence of power offerings in India too. We cater to the hyper scale datacenter market that is rapidly becoming the largest consumer of on premise or traditional IT. Everything around systems of engagement is directly tied to cognitive computing that needs to derive insights from the large amount of data -structured and unstructured.
There has been tremendous dislocation in storage industry with flash, software defined and object storage (on premse and off premise). We are positioned as a leader or as number one in each one of these new storage areas. We have shifted to the future of storage as opposed investments in traditional storage segments. IBM's precise hardware portfolio aims to service clients with on premise and off premise solutions and R&D investments are focused on the future of the IT industry. Hybrid cloud implementationsinclude hardware with more of end-customer organizations reaping the advantage of both worlds - on prem and off prem.
