BlackBerry manufacturer RIM had 'single point of failure'

BlackBerry maker RIM had a single point of failure for most of the countries affected by this week's catastrophic outage, prompting serious business continuity questions.

On the question of compensation for RIM customers, Dillon said it would probably be down to the mobile operators themselves. The operators pay RIM a monthly service fee for each BlackBerry customer they sign up, with costs passed onto the customer.

Two operators in the Gulf region have already announced they will refund their customers for three days of lost service.
