Hard CFO lessons from mobile usage studies

Sandra Gittlen | Feb. 13, 2012
Here's some homework for over the weekend. If you haven't yet read this week's article "Smartphone Data Shakeup: The End of 'Unlimited'," you should.

What we think of as average usage obviously has to be reconsidered. CFOs can't guess at this. If thousands of your employees are using mobile devices and you have thus far relied on "unlimited" plans, then you now have to investigate how those devices are truly being used. And you have to tailor plans to specific user roles and actual trends in data consumption.

Also, think about how you intend for them to use the devices in the near term. Are you rolling out mobile access to your ERP application? Do you plan to institute weekly videoconferences for a certain pool of remote workers? Has your executive talked about his or her favorite mobile music streaming application? All of these factors will impact the data plans you choose.

The disappearance of unlimited data plans has a direct and tangible impact on your organization. To ensure you don't overpay on improperly tiered plans or overage fees, take the time to understand your organization's mobile usage. Doing so will be surely be worth the time.
