HKT enters the payment space in Hong Kong

It does so by launching a SIM-card based mobile wallet called Tap & Go that works for both in-store and online transactions.


Hong Kong telco HKT has launched Tap & Go, a SIM card that provides a mobile wallet capability to its customers using its csl or 1010 services.

By using the SIM card with the accompanying mobile app, users could tap their NFC-enabled phone at any MasterCard PayPass readers worldwide to pay for their purchases. They could also use the app to transfer money instantly to other Tap & Go users remotely or by tapping their smartphones, said HKT.

Tap & Go wallets support in-store transactions of up to HK$1,000, and online transactions of up to HK$10,000. The transactions are currently settled in Hong Kong dollars, but foreign currency transactions will be enabled in due course, said HKT.

 Users can either opt for automatic top-ups of up to HK$10,000 a day, or add funds on demand - in multiples of HK$50 between HK$100 to HK$3,000 - at any HKT, csl or 1010 stores.

Besides enabling payments and peer-to-peer transfer, the Tap & Go app allows users to review their past three months' transaction history. Users could set also set PIN code for the app to protect their e-wallets.

"Tap & Go unleashes the capabilities of NFC and all-in-one SIM to bring a new, convenient and secure payment experience for customers," said Alex Arena, Group Managing Director of HKT.
