"This service also creates a secure data vault on a user's hard-drive to provide protected storage area for sensitive information," he said. "When the laptop is locked-down, access to information in secure data vault is locked down as well and cannot be read even if the hard-drive is attached to another laptop. Laptop owners can display custom message on locked laptops facilitating return by good samaritans and can revive the laptop to its full functionality by using their personal password."

Chan said that under the programme, Ingram Micro would offer boxed Intel Anti Theft service at a starting retail price of RM99.00 (US$32.85) for a 1-year period and RM199.00 (US$66) for a 3-year period from the day the user activates the Service. Intel will be responsible for service hosting, customer support and working with different OEMs [official equipment manufacturers] to ensure their laptop hardware is embedded with Intel Anti-Theft Technology.
