The iPad has disappeared from the Chinese Amazon store amid a trademark dispute in the country between Apple and Proview.
Reuters reports that Amazon was asked to withdraw the product from sale as it is not an authorised reseller of the iPad in China "or the United States".
But the WSJ source believes that Apple and Amazon China have been working together for weeks to have the listings removed from the site.
The trademark dispute has seen iPads seized by government officials and speculation that the iPad 3 could be subject to a customs ban when it is launched, preventing imports and exports of the device.
However, Apple contends that Proview's claim on the iPad trademark - which was registered in 2001 - is no longer valid since a company acting on Proview's behalf licensed it to the Cupertino company.
Proview disputes that the company that licensed the trademark to Apple had any authorisation to do so.
