A delegation of ICT leaders, led by the National ICT Association of Malaysia, PIKOM, which included MDeC, MDV, Cyberview and Telekom Malaysia, recently went to the latest  World Congress on IT [WCIT], held in Guadalajara, Mexico from September 29 through October 1, 2014.

PIKOM chairman Cheah Kok Hoong said this year's Congress, which was hosted by Canieti, the Mexican member of WITSA. [World Information Technology and Services Alliance], also included "a momentous occasion both for PIKOM and Malaysia during the congress. At the WCIT Gala Dinner, TM Research & Development bagged the highest WITSA ICT Excellence Awards for the night, the Chairman's Award."

"PIKOM nominated TM Research & Development for the WITSA ICT Excellence Awards," said Cheah. "The work that TMR&D has done is truly at the cutting edge of technology. This is an amazing accolade as the Chairman's Award is the highest award in WITSA. It is the first time we have won the highest WITSA award. PIKOM is proud of the achievement as it is testament of the strength of innovation of Malaysia's ICT industry. May this spur the industry forward to creating world-class solutions."

Malaysia has won two further prizes. "In addition, we salute Malaysian companies, MDT Innovations and Softspace , which have done us proud with winning the merit award," he said. "Winning three awards in this internationally coveted competition augurs very well for the future of our industry. I look forward and encourage the industry to build on this success and become globally competitive ICT companies."

Also, during the general assembly of WITSA, PIKOM has been awarded the right to host WCIT in 2020, said Cheah. "This is akin to hosting the Olympics of the ICT industry."

WCIT 2008 was first in the region

In May 2008, PIKOM hosted the first WCIT (WITSA's 16th World Congress on Information Technology) in this region and attracted 3,313 delegates from more than 80 countries, (including ICT ministers from 35 countries) as well as 42,659 expo visitors from 92 countries during which 100 prominent personalities spoke. WCIT 2008 also raised more than US$11 million in sponsorships, the most in the history of the World Congress and was declared by WITSA at the time as the best-ever in its 30-year history.

"The event was a huge success with the presence of DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Dipertuan Agong [the King], the Prime Minister, royalty, cabinet ministers, corporate leaders and industry movers and shakers," he said.

At the same meeting, David Wong representing PIKOM was elected to the Board of WITSA, said Cheah. "This is another feather on Malaysia's cap. It is a great advantage to benefit the local ICT industry to influence global market trends and policy advocacy. David is an advisor to PIKOM as well as the Chairman of Outsourcing Malaysia, a chapter of PIKOM. He was the chairman of PIKOM during the WCIT in 2008."

"This is indeed a proud moment for Malaysia as we achieved much at WCIT 2014,"he said. "Now is to ensure we deliver on the expectations. PIKOM will be putting in place the structure and resources to ensure that Malaysia fully benefits from the global recognition given to us."

First organised in 1978, the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT), which is held every two years, gathers senior global business, government and academic leaders discuss emerging markets, legal and policy issues, political and economic trends, emerging technologies, ICT user perspectives and business opportunities in the global marketplace.
