One third of Malaysians love their mobile phones more than their TVs

Malaysian site owners must optimise for the Mobile Web, according to a new study from Google and IPSOS Research.

According to Internet giant Google and IPSOS Research, 43 per cent of Malaysians access the Internet via their smartphones and one in three would give up their TV rather than their smartphone.

Google Malaysia country head Sajit Sivanandan said the study of 30,000 users in 30 countries, including Malaysia, gives a detailed snapshot of how people use their smartphones. Some of the findings about Malaysian users include:

- 1 in 3 Malaysians would rather give up their TV than their smartphone.

- On a daily basis: 43 percent of Malaysian smartphone users go onto the mobile Internet.

- 68 percent never leave home without their smartphones and 58 percent first access information on their smartphones and then follow up to find more info on their laptops or PCs.

- 64 percent of smartphone owners use their devices to get on the net to get information when not in front of a computer and 47 percent say their smartphones provide them with a quick answer to a question when they need an immediate answer.

Sivanandan added that consumers in Southeast Asia are more likely to have made a purchase on their smartphone than users in the U.S. "The intention to use more apps in the future seems to be significantly higher in developing Asia-Pacific economies, as compared to developed countries across the world. For example, 39 percent of US and UK consumers, and 45 percent of Japanese consumers, intend to use more apps in the future, while more than 60 percent of Malaysian, Thai, and Indian consumers and 59 percent of Indonesian consumers intend to do so."
