Polycom is extending its RealPresence platform by introducing the CloudAXIS suite, which allows contacts from other communication products to be brought into a unified environment.
CloudAXIS allows a link in an email or calendar invitation to be sent to anyone with a browser and camera, who can then join an enterprise-grade video meeting using their smartphone, tablet, computer or video room system.
Polycom A/NZ managing director, Gary Denman, said CloudAXIS is a result of consumerisation of IT, BYOD, pervasive networks, and a growing demand for new forms of collaboration and communication from individuals.
"One of those growing areas is video as a communication method between people as individuals and internal organisations," he said.
There are already several consumer-led services that have been available for a period of time, such as Facetime, Skype and Google Talk, but Denman said an enterprise-grade video capable service has been missing in the market.
"CloudAXIS enables any user to be able to connect with any user through a high quality video experience," he said.
Deman characterises CloudAXIS as a software layer that sits on top of the existing core infrastructure of RealPresence, enabling anyone with a web browser, camera and sound system embedded in their device to take part in a video call in a secure environment.
"What CloudAXIS is delivering is the ability to bring people into an environment that has traditionally been an island in itself and bring those people in, regardless of them sitting outside of their organisation or without a specific piece of hardware to integrate," he said.
RealPresence CloudAXIS suite is available from Polycom now.
