The art of writing in the age of algorithms

Tom Kaneshige | Feb. 17, 2014
A Web-based app promises to help you write like Hemingway. But does HemingwayApp, based on an algorithm that analyses your words using Hemingway's rules on writing, offer a useful service or does it just exploit the Hemingway name?

As Didion's essay shows, the craft of writing is complex, nuanced, intensely detailed -- and Hemingway was one of the best at it. The HemingwayApp exploits his name to market a service that dumbs down writing and, at least in a small sense, devalues his work. Seems a little ironic and sad.
