Well, that was fast. Just days after Amazon and GameStop announced $10 upgrade deals for Xbox 360 to Xbox One games, the first signs of similar deals for PlayStation fans appeared on Wednesday. Activision says that just like on the Xbox, Call of Duty: Ghosts fans can purchase the PlayStation 3 version ($60 at retail) and then upgrade the game to PlayStation 4 for $10 down the line.
Activision didn't specifically say you had to trade in your PS3 copy, but that seems likely given how the Xbox upgrades are working. All told, it will cost $70 to play the new Call of Duty release on both consoles.
Activision didn't provide any specific details about how long you'll be able to upgrade, but we're guessing it will be available through the end of the year, similar to the Xbox deal. The game maker also didn't mention if the deal would apply to specific retailers, but again it seems likely the PS3 to PS4 upgrade will be in partnership with a retailer like Amazon or GameStop.
Call of Duty: Ghosts is slated for release on November 5, just 10 days before the PlayStation 4 rolls out on November 15. That's not much time to wait if you really want to experience this game on the PS4. But Activision's deal is good news for anyone hoping to finish the game in record time after its release, or who plans on waiting a little while for the hype to die down before grabbing the new console.
Activision also said Call of Duty fans would be able to transfer their season passes to the new PlayStation platform, as well as any of their in-game progress.
Last Wednesday, Microsoft announced a Season Pass Guarantee for select Xbox titles from major game makers including Activision, EA, and Ubisoft for titles such as Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4.
Along with Activision, EA and Ubisoft are releasing some of the most anticipated game titles of the fall and the two companies already have upgrade plans for the Xbox One in place. Neither company nor their retail partners have announced a similar deal for the PlayStation 4 so far.
The specific EA and Ubisoft games you can trade-in for an Xbox upgrade vary by retailer but they include:
- Madden NFL 25 (August 27)
- FIFA 14 (September 25)
- NBA 2K14 (October 2)
- Assassin's Creed Black Flag (October 29)
- Battlefield 4 (October 29)
- Watch Dogs (November 19)
- Need for Speed Rivals (November 19)
The gaming announcements have been coming in fast lately thanks to the ongoing Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany. The gamer fest officially runs from August 21 until August 25.
