Guest View: Resorts World Sentosa — Succeeding with mission-critical communication

Balbir Singh | June 25, 2013
Resorts World at Sentosa is home to one of Singapore’s largest private Terrestrial Trunked Radio systems.

The size of the network is distinctive in scale, with over 1,500 users covering an area of over 5 sq km of built-up and open spaces that comprises Sentosa island, off Singapore, as well as parts of Singapore. The digital network is highly secure and the capacity is dynamically optimised to user needs, allowing users the ability to communicate on talk groups with colleagues from different teams and departments, thus enabling the operational aspects of RWS to run like clockwork. Since its inception in 2009, the RWS TETRA network has met the rigorous and demanding requirements for a highly sophisticated, adaptive, and robust communications solution to support the complexity and scale of their operations. In fact, their use of best-of-breed technologies has advanced the cause of TETRA to become the leading radio communications technology for the leisure and hospitality business.

Ubiquitous assured communication
The communications-critical TETRA network has helped to facilitate its daily operations, major events and response to emergencies when necessary. The network's capacity, reliability, and reach of services — proven time and again through the smooth handling of major events hosted by RWS — underscores the true value of a dedicated communications system. Since its opening in January 2010, RWS has received over 30 million visitors.

According to Oh, "since January 2010, our scale of operations has grown steadily, and our TETRA communication infrastructure has kept pace and delivered resiliency and dependability at all times, which is so critical to our everyday operations."

The network's reach extends throughout the entire premise of RWS, including outdoor performance spaces, the Marine Life Park, the Festive Grand theater, a convention centre, six hotels, retail and F&B outlets, car parks, open spaces, and basements.

Secure communication, a lifeline
The resilience of the TETRA network is the lifeline for service staff during planned and unplanned events.  Hosting of VIPs, VVIPs, and dignitaries impose unique demands and at times, require unprecedented levels of collaboration. The various RWS team, such as the traffic and parking control, security teams, and other services teams are able to communicate instantaneously and clearly from anywhere on the island to coordinate their actions, be it during everyday operations or managing any emergency. A VIP visit requires maintaining a high level of confidentiality, in terms of their location and schedule. The network security parameters offered by TETRA ensure safety of communication and information.

The RWS team is well-prepared for any emergency situation. The ubiquitous TETRA network ensures this - when in need, they have the ability to broadcast instantaneously to different groups about the situation and deliver speedy, unified, and coordinated response.

TETRA network now and in the future
Being digital, highly scalable, and offering advanced features, RWS continues to roll out new services and has forward-looking plans.
