Japanese media companies band together to launch international channel

There are plans for Hello! Japan to be distributed to 10 territories in Asia.

A television channel promoting Japanese tourism and companies debuted yesterday on 25 February 2013 on Singaporean operator StarHub's cable broadcasts.

Hello! Japan was launched by J Food & Culture TV (JFCTV) as a complimentary channel for StarHub's subscribers.

JFCTV investors include media players Dentsu, Nippon Television Network Corporation, TV Asahi Corporation, Tokyo Broadcasting System Holdings, TV TOKYO Holdings Corporation, Singapore Media Alliance, Imagica Robot Holdings, Hokkaido Television Broadcasting and Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions.

This is the first time that several media content companies in Japan have collaborated to integrate and edit content for distribution overseas.

The Japanese content currently being broadcast around the world is either content purchased individually by overseas broadcasting stations or the NHK World TV (English) and NHK World Premium (Japanese) programmes.

There are, however, no channels broadcasting over a wide area that have a Japanese company or companies at their core. Therefore, the group of media companies launched this project to both increase the market for Japanese content and enhance the presence of Japan in other countries.

The companies also see the export of broadcast content as a move to promote awareness and understanding of Japanese culture.

After its debut in Singapore, Hello! Japan will be distributed to 10 other countries and territories in the Asia Pacific region: Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Vietnam, India, South Korea and Taiwan.

"We are pleased to be the world's first to bring in such premium content that has never been seen outside of Japan, to our local audience. The addition of Hello! Japan will strengthen StarHub TV's offerings of Japanese line-up, reinforcing its leadership in Asian content," said Lee Soo Hui, vice president of Media Business Unit StarHub.

"We are confident that Hello! Japan will be welcomed by Singaporeans as many of them hail Japan as one of their favourite travel destinations," added Lee.
