KUALA LUMPUR, 27 OCTOBER 2010 - Malaysian communications provider Maxis has launched its Unity Conferencing service for the country's courts to help streamline the management of cases, show-cause hearings and inter-court communications, it said.
Maxis senior vice-president and head of business services, Fitri Abdullah, said the solution would raise the efficiency of communications between registrars and lawyers on hearing dates and the management of case information in court.
"Currently, the practice is for all three parties - the registrar and the lawyers - to be physically present in court to determine the dates for specific cases," said Abdullah. "Many times, a party is unable to make it on the scheduled date and time, leading to a delay in the hearing date and creating a backlog of court cases."
"The implementation of Maxis' Unity Conferencing service would help registrars and lawyers manage communications more efficiently, reduce waiting time and travelling costs and improve the overall efficiency of case management in court," he said.
Chief Justice of Malaysia, YAA [Yang Amat Arif or 'Most Learned'] Tun Dato' Seri Zaki bin Tun Azmi was also at the launch of the Unity Conferencing service held at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex.
Maxis' Abdullah said the Unity Conferencing solution allowed the conference organiser to set up an instant audio conference or schedule an audio conference in advance for up to 10 mobile or fixed line participants. "The participants of the conference can be anywhere, on any device and any network. The solution is device and network agnostic. The audio conference may also be recorded and filed for future reference."
"To ensure that the service is secure, conversations are encrypted and logging into the service is only via an authorised mobile number and password," he said. "The charges are affordable and only charged on a pay-to-use basis. All call-out charges are based on a fixed rate to all domestic numbers at 11 sen [3 US cents] per use, while call-in charges are based on the respective individual plans subscribed to by the caller. There is no monthly subscription fee for this service but a RM2 [64 US cents] conference set-up fee will be charged for every conference call made. A recording of the conference call is also available on request at RM5 [US$1.60] per recording."
