Introduces world’s smallest three-axis analog gyroscope

STMicroelectronics has announced world's smallest high performance three-axis analog gyroscope to address the demand for smaller footprints in next-generation applications such as motion control for MMI (man-machine interfaces) and GPS (global positioning system) navigation systems.

This L3G3250A has expanded the motion-sensor portfolio for STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor provider and the supplier of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) for consumer and portable applications.

STMicroelectronics has included in the new high-performance three-axis analog-output gyroscope, its robust and field-proven micromachining technology that it claims have already been used for producing about 1.54 billion motion sensors with a package-shrinking roadmap.

Housed in a package measuring just 3.5x3x1 mm, the sensor is completely immune to audio noise and mechanical vibrations coupled through the printed circuit board. This allows the newly released gyroscope to operate with greater accuracy and reliability.

STMicroelectronics has announced the availability of engineering samples and has scheduled the volume production for the fourth quarter of 2011.

Sensing accuracy and reliability

The L3G3250A has a single sensing structure for motion measurement along all three orthogonal axes, and this feature according to STMicroelectronics, significantly increases sensing accuracy and reliability to deliver the industry's highest level of output stability over time and temperature.

Manufacturers of mobile phones, tablets, game consoles, and other smart consumer devices are expected to benefit from this release as the combination of high sensing resolution with outstanding immunity to audio noise and vibrations makes motion-sensing user interfaces more realistic in these products.

The L3G3250A can detect and measure very fast gestures and movements. It also includes an embedded self-test function, a wide supply voltage range (2.4 V to 3.6 V), embedded power-down and sleep modes, an embedded low pass filter and a high pass filter reset function, and high shock survivability.
