Dobroski also cited the incident last October when Nadella put his foot in his mouth at a women-in-computing conference. At the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, Nadella answered a question about how women should put themselves up for promotion by saying, "It's not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along."
Heat followed, and Nadella quickly issued a statement that acknowledged that he had answered the question "completely wrong."
As for advice to chief executives hoping to do better next year, Dobroski had some succinct suggestions. "Be passionate about the business, but especially show strong leadership, lay out a clear vision for the company's direction, and communicate that clearly to employees," he said.
