In its drive to transform data centre economics and experience, Juniper Networks rolls out a whole host of solution offerings, backed by its high-performance networking technologies and expertise, and further bolstered by stellar partners such as VMWare and IBM. Asia Pacific Enterprise Architect Greg Bunt explains how Juniper is going to reduce the complexities of data centre networking economics.

SINGAPORE, MAY 27, 2010On Tuesday last (May 18), high-performance networking solutions vendor Juniper Networks announced the availability of a slew of new products and services, and made public major partnerships it had struck with other leading technology providers. According to a statement it released to the media, all the offerings it made on the day were calculated to help enterprise IT dramatically reduce the cost and complexity of data centre networking while also improving application and business performance.

Referring to the new network that Juniper has been espousing for a number of years now, the statement cited key factors driving the emergence or the evolution of the network of the future, among them critical innovations in automation, virtualization and fabric technologies, which can cut time to operation by up to 50 percent and eliminate up to 35 percent of data centre networking capital expenditures. In concrete terms, Juniper unveiled new switches and new routers that purportedly deliver up to a five-fold and eight-fold improvement in network performance, respectively.

Product and partnerships aside, Junipers message was much broader.

Todays announcements overcome the old network approach of affing more boxes to boost performance, which adds cost and complexity to the data centre, it said in the statement. Alternatively, optimising for economics has typically required sacrificing speed, scalability and other performance needs. Juniper has now created a new network alternative for customers by delivering a cloud-ready data centre architecture that eliminates trade-offs between experience and economics.

Juniper is introducing new capabilities that will help customers simplify, automate and secure their enterprise and data center networks, while providing a strong network foundation to manage and deliver cloud services, it said further, before elaborating on how the new offerings the three main elements of its solutions strategy: simplification, automation and security.

Simplification: Junipers new 3-2-1 data centre network architecture will allow customers to flatten and simplify legacy data centre networks, using Junipers breakthrough Virtual Chassis fabric technology to reduce from three to two layers today, and then collapse to one layer via Junipers Project Stratus fabric in the future. Juniper also helps drive simplification through a single network [operating system] (Junos), single software release chain, and flexible software platforms (Junos, Junos Space and Junos Pulse). Building on that software and architecture, Juniper unveiled new 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches and routers that deliver significant improvements in network performance; along with a data centre roadmap that converges networks.

Automation: Junos Space delivers an unmatched network application platform to automate provisioning, management and support for data centre networks, lowering the cost of data centre operations and improvingthe end user experience. This includes four new software applications based on Junos Space (introduced in October 2009)Virtual Control software to manage physical and virtual systems from a common orchestration platform; Ethernet Design and Security Design software to enable rapid configuration and deployment of data centre networks and security policies; and Service Now with Service Insight to enable fast and proactive detection, diagnosis and resolution of network issues. To enable Virtual Control, Juniper announced a new collaboration with VMware that takes advantage of their open APIs to achieve seamless orchestration across both physical and virtual network elements.
