Singapore organisations better at fighting cyber threats

The number and frequency of attacks have declined, indicate Symantec’s 2011 State of Security Survey.

Singapore organisations are getting better at fighting the war against cyber security threats, according to Symantec's 2011 State of Security Survey.

An exploration of the state of cyber security efforts in organisations of all sizes shows that more enterprises have experienced a decline in the number and frequency of attacks compared to 2010. 

But security is still the leading business risk faced by IT for the second year in a row as per the study, which is based on 3,300 responses in 36 countries. Out of these 3,300 responses, 200 came from Singapore.

An increasing number of businesses find it critical to keep their operations and information secure.

About 44 percent of respondents see cyber security to be somewhat or significantly more important than 12 months ago. 

Eleven percent of the respondents think cyber security is somewhat or significantly less important.

Impact of social media

Fifty-two percent of respondents agreed that social media affected the difficulty of providing cyber security.

"The growing adoption of technologies such as social media, mobile computing and consumerisation of IT has brought about new security challenges for Singapore enterprises, even as companies are ramping up their cyber security efforts," said Tan Yuh Woei, country manager, Symantec Singapore.

"While it is clear that attackers are employing more targeted, sophisticated and silent tactics to steal data and wreak havoc, organisations need to be aware and address the risks brought about by internal unintentional actions that may cause breaches. To defend themselves against such rapidly evolving threats, it is critical for businesses to deploy innovative security solutions and best practices that the industry is delivering to stay protected both externally and from within."   

To combat security threats, Symantec advises organisations to develop and enforce IT policies. Businesses should take an information-centric approach to protect both information and interactions. They can also minimise the consequences associated with lost devices by proactively encrypting endpoints.
